An overview

How are we?
All of us experience emotional, psychological or behavioural issues of some kind at some time in our lives. These may range from feeling a bit ‘stressed out’ to experiencing devastating panic attacks. We may find that we desperately want to stop doing something that we do, or start doing something that we don’t, but however hard we try, we fail. We may feel uncomfortable in certain situations, perhaps driving a car, or speaking in public or eating in a restaurant. Perhaps we just can’t cope with exams. We may have illogical fears or phobias that seriously affect the quality of our lives. Sometimes we just don’t feel good about ourselves, or our jobs, or relationships, or where we are going in life.

In short, there may be something about ourselves that we want to change for the better.

Why are we?
Many of these issues result from conflict between the conscious and subconscious parts of the mind. Whilst the conscious mind realises a need for positive change, the subconscious resists. This is often due to a belief system established as a child but which is now out of date for the adult. The subconscious does not actually think. It is instinctive and works to protect the individual, to ensure survival. So it resists change which conflicts with old programs that have helped us to survive so far. The more we try to overcome the subconscious response and act against its beliefs, the more it recognises a threat. It creates reactions and symptoms to make us do, or stop doing something, so that we avoid perceived risks and remain safe. It will always win over conscious willpower.

So it can be difficult to understand why we feel or behave as we do because the answers are hidden away in the subconscious mind. The great news is that hypnotherapy can help. Using hypnosis I can help you to access your subconscious mind, and then with appropriate therapeutic techniques I can help you to release or reprogram unsuitable and outdated beliefs. Hypnotherapy helps to create new understanding and harmony between the conscious and subconscious parts of the mind and lays the foundation for beneficial change.
